START DATE: Negotiable

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with experience and education

Qualifications:

  1. Indiana teaching license in Earth/Space Science or other related field, preferred.
  2. Successful experience teaching students in grades K through 12, preferred.
  3. Knowledge in the use of the planetarium projector as a tool for teaching elementary and secondary students.
  4. Broad knowledge of audiovisual equipment and its use.
  5. Knowledge of computers and a broad range of computer applications.
  6. Organizational skill to efficiently schedule the planetarium and coordinate planetarium use with teachers, principals, and the transportation department.
  7. Knowledge and skill in the areas of public/media relations and program promotion.
  8. Ability to provide training and assistance to the planetarium staff.
  9. Knowledge of budgeting and materials & equipment acquisition procedures of the Merrillville Community School Corporation.


Responsibilities:

  1. Schedule, coordinate and present programs as part of the planetarium curriculum for students. 
  2. Prepare and continuously improve planetarium programs as part of the planetarium curriculum for students.
  3. Serve as a resource person for teachers, students, and administrators in the areas of astronomy and space science.
  4. Determine appropriate long and short-range goals and objectives for the planetarium in consultation with the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning.
  5. Write and continuously assess and improve the planetarium curriculum for students in consultation with the Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction and appropriate grade level & subject area teachers.
  6. Promote the planetarium as an educational and cultural resource of the Northwest Indiana Community through the district public relations, social media, webpage, and/or other digital formats.  Promote the planetarium activities and programming via news media, outside groups, and interested individuals.  Encourage community support of the planetarium.
  7. Schedule and prepare public programs with multiple showings during fall, winter, spring & summer seasons.  Supervise the reservations & ticket selling process for public programs.
  8. Schedule and prepare programs for outside groups around programming for students of the Merrillville Community School Corporation.
  9. Serve as a resource person for the news media and interested individuals in the areas of astronomy & space science.
  10. Make recommendations and requests regarding planetarium staff, volunteers and opportunities for individual and/or student groups to assist.
  11. Prepare the annual supply budget and submit it to the Assistant Superintendent of Business Affairs.
  12. Order supplies and instructional materials based on district policies & procedures for the planetarium.
  13. Maintain budget and inventory records in keeping with the Merrillville Community School Corporation and State Board of Accounts rules and regulations.
  14. Provide statistics on planetarium operations:
    1. use of the planetarium by students of the Merrillville Community School Corporation, outside groups, and the pubic program attendance
    2. receipts from outside groups and public programs
    3. disbursements from outside groups and public programs
  15. In cooperation with the district technology department, maintain existing planetarium equipment.  Develop plans for and recommend upgrades to the planetarium.  Order new equipment as needed in cooperation with the Assistant Superintendent of Business Affairs.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Corporation’s policy on staff evaluation.
